I do understand the need to reduce emissions and improve air quality, as a climate change ‘believer’ and an asthmatic, but there is no credible public transport alternative to driving when I want to take my children into York, to get to work on time or to reliably make it to appointments. In some areas residents may have access to excellent bus services but we in Rufforth do not. Unless CYC’s persecution of the car is accompanied by investment in public transport, at a level which I can only assume would be totally unaffordable, then the result will be that York is finally closed to us. My partner and I really want to support local businesses, now more than ever before, but if we can’t use the car to get into the city we will need to take our business and spending elsewhere, or move away entirely to maintain our quality of life. The amount of pot holes, blocked drains, uncollected bins and fly tipping in areas outside of the city walls is ridiculous. Complaints made take too long for action to be taken, if it is even taken at all. The council encourages too much “alcohol tourism” which makes the city centre a very unfriendly place for families with young children. If the tourism sector was more based on York’s rich history, then it would be more family friendly. Walking around town on a Saturday morning should not mean being exposed to large groups of stag and hen parties wearing very little clothing, already drunk shouting abuse at each other or others.
